The turnoffs to beach hotels in Paje, Jambiani, and Kendwa are often sand, loose gravel, or rutted dirt, especially after rain. Stone Town's own streets are narrow and pot-holed in places. And during the long rains (March–May), even some tarmac roads develop washouts.

This is the sweet spot for most visitors. The Toyota RAV4 (available in both 3-door and 5-door versions) is the most common hire car on the island for a reason — automatic, reliable, comfortable enough for a week of exploring, and priced in the middle of the range.
A small family, comfortable with manual
The Suzuki Escudo (5-door) is a lightweight, fuel-efficient SUV that's proven itself on every kind of Zanzibar road, from Stone Town's alleys to the sandy approach to Paje. If you'd rather stay in automatic at a similar price point, the Toyota RAV4 Retro (5-door) covers the same ground.
Travellers who want a bit more comfort and presence

Manual or automatic?
Zanzibar drives on the left, which takes a little adjustment for visitors from right-hand-drive countries — pairing that with a manual gearbox adds a second thing to think about. If it's your first time driving on the left, or you'd simply rather not deal with a clutch on unfamiliar roads, an automatic (RAV4, Harrier, Alphard, or Land Cruiser Prado) removes one variable. If you're comfortable with manual and want to save a little on the daily rate, the Nissan Juke and Suzuki Escudo are both well-proven options.
