Do You Also Need an International Driving Permit?

Not in addition to the Zanzibar permit. The two are distinct documents, but for driving in Zanzibar, the local permit is what counts. An IDP is not required on top of it.
That said, if you already have an IDP, bring it. Some rental companies include it in their documentation requirements as standard. It does no harm and may be useful if you are also driving elsewhere in East Africa during the same trip.

Zanzibar Road Rules Every Driver Should Know

  • Drive on the left — just like the UK. If you are from a right-hand traffic country, take the first few minutes slowly.
  • Speed limits — 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads. These are enforced.
  • Speed bumps — they are everywhere, often unmarked. Slow down through every village or you will wreck your suspension.
  • Night driving — avoid rural roads after dark. Poor lighting and pedestrians walking on the road make it genuinely dangerous.
  • Stone Town — narrow, one-way streets with almost no parking. Walk rather than drive when exploring the old quarter.
  • Police checkpoints — routine and common on all major routes. Keep your permit, licence, and rental documents accessible. Officers are typically professional and checks are quick if your paperwork is in order.
  • Fuel stations — fill up before heading east or north. Rural stations are scarce.

What Happens If You Drive Without a Permit?

Driving in Zanzibar without a valid permit is illegal. Police checkpoints run routinely on main routes — between Stone Town and Nungwi, between Stone Town and Paje, and at the airport junction.
If caught without a permit:
  • You will likely receive an on-the-spot fine
  • In more serious cases, the vehicle may be detained
  • Your insurance may be void if driving without proper documentation
  • Your rental company may not be liable if you did not provide documentation at booking
